The Mouth Cancer foundation (MCF) short patient
survey
The Mouth Cancer foundation (MCF) has organised a short patient
survey on on xerostomia and Xerotin which is a new artificial
saliva now available within the UK. This survey is a joint
collaborative project between the Mouth Cancer Foundation
and SpePharm UK Ltd. There is more information at http://www.rdoc.org.uk/xerotin.html
It is part of our effort to make available samples of new
products for trial and evaluation by head and neck cancer
patients, who often suffer a dry mouth as a side effect of
their cancer treatment. For every questionnaire completed
and returned, the Mouth Cancer Foundation willl receive a
donation of £5.00 to the Mouth Cancer Foundation from
SpePharm UK Ltd.
Please assist by completing the questionnaire.

DATA FOR HEAD AND
NECK ONCOLOGY
In Autumn 2002, BAHNO joined forces with the Clinical Effectiveness
Unit (CEU) of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the
National Clinical Audit Support Programme (NCASP) within the
NHSIA (NHS Information Authority), and the Department of Health
(DH) to deliver National Comparative Audit based upon the
National Cancer Data Set module for head and neck cancer.
This project has now developed into a national web-based
data collection facility (DaHNO). By the end of 2004 over
a 122 head and neck teams had successfully registered, or
were planning to submit their data to DaHNO by another route.
A review of the 34 U.K. Cancer networks has shown that more
than 24 have a majority of their teams currently connected.
Clinical data is now flowing and the function to compare with
peers will shortly be activated on the system as sufficient
total records become available for analysis.
The recently published Guidance on Improving Outcomes in
Head and Neck Cancer has confirmed the requirement to submit
data. BAHNO has consistently supported this principle.
The NHS Information Authority is being reshaped. NCASP continues
to be partners in the DaHNO audit and has now moved to the
Health and Social Care Information Centre. The DaHNO project
team and NCASP are working with the National Programme for
IT to allow, as new technology becomes available, as smooth
an integration as possible in different methods of data capture
and transmission over the next five years.
Members of the DaHNO Head and Neck Clinical Reference Group,
as guardians of submitted data, are now developing
policies for future data access (i.e. who can access anonymised
data and what criteria must be met to allow this). This may
be of relevance to members who seek access for future research
interests.
Further details of the DaHNO project can be obtained from

QUALITY OF LIFE
ASSESSMENT
BAHNO is actively involved in promoting the assessment of
outcomes in head and neck cancer. The measurement of health
related quality of life is an important part of this process
and, following a presentation at the 2001 Annual Meeting,
BAHNO Council is recommending the adoption of the University
of Washington questionnaire as part of the minimum dataset.

in a summary
prepared by Simon Rogers .

in Head and Neck Cancers
The consultation version of this document has been produced
by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence and is now
available. It can be downloaded from the NICE
website where further information about the project can
be found.
