IMPORTANT INFORMATION about
ACCEA 2008/2009
BAHNO has again been accepted as a nominating body for national
higher clinical excellence awards (level 9 and above).
Council of BAHNO has approved the following process for nominating
members for National Clinical Excellence Awards:
All full members will be circulated asking them to submit
CVQs for consideration by BAHNO to receive support. The process
will be advertised on our web-site BAHNO.org.uk
The ACCEA nomination panel consists of all elected officers
on Council. The professional members of the panel are comprised
of both national award holders and non-award holders. In addition
Messrs Madeleine Wang and Marisa Mason are lay members of
the panel.
CVQs will be scored, taking account of national and international
achievements, using the ACCEA approved scoring system.
Citations will be produced by members of the panel most closely
allied to individuals by specialty, and who have the greatest
knowledge of the nominees national and international contribution
to the specialty of Head & Neck Oncology.
BAHNO will make recommendations to ACCEA based upon the national
and international contribution of nominees. Local activities
will be supported by employers and regional sub-committees.
Where any member of the panel is applying for an award, they
will not contribute to the nomination process in the same
class of award for which they are applying.
Full members of BAHNO who wish to receive support from BAHNO
should complete the following CVQ(s) to Ian Martin Honorary
Administrative Secretary at: Ian.Martin@chs.northy.nhs.uk.

Although you will not be able to submit this CVQ to ACCEA,
you will be able to cut and paste from this form into the
electronic application form when it becomes available.
In due course the electronic forms will become available
on the ACCEA website, and applicants will be required to submit
them themselves electronically to ACCEA following the guidance
and using only the electronic forms at: www.advisorybodies.doh.gov.uk/accea.
Please note that this year those applicants applying for Gold
or Silver awards must specify which class of award they are
applying for, unlike last year when the two classes were considered
together.
In order for BAHNO to consider supplying a supporting citation
we must receive an exact copy of your CVQ by e-mail by 5pm
on 31st October 2008 at the latest. Please note that we are
NOT able to accept any applications received after this deadline.
We regret that we are unable to accept hard copy printed CVQs.
DATA FOR HEAD AND
NECK ONCOLOGY
In Autumn 2002, BAHNO joined forces with the Clinical Effectiveness
Unit (CEU) of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the
National Clinical Audit Support Programme (NCASP) within the
NHSIA (NHS Information Authority), and the Department of Health
(DH) to deliver National Comparative Audit based upon the
National Cancer Data Set module for head and neck cancer.
This project has now developed into a national web-based
data collection facility (DaHNO). By the end of 2004 over
a 122 head and neck teams had successfully registered, or
were planning to submit their data to DaHNO by another route.
A review of the 34 U.K. Cancer networks has shown that more
than 24 have a majority of their teams currently connected.
Clinical data is now flowing and the function to compare with
peers will shortly be activated on the system as sufficient
total records become available for analysis.
The recently published Guidance on Improving Outcomes in
Head and Neck Cancer has confirmed the requirement to submit
data. BAHNO has consistently supported this principle.
The NHS Information Authority is being reshaped. NCASP continues
to be partners in the DaHNO audit and has now moved to the
Health and Social Care Information Centre. The DaHNO project
team and NCASP are working with the National Programme for
IT to allow, as new technology becomes available, as smooth
an integration as possible in different methods of data capture
and transmission over the next five years.
Members of the DaHNO Head and Neck Clinical Reference Group,
as guardians of submitted data, are now developing
policies for future data access (i.e. who can access anonymised
data and what criteria must be met to allow this). This may
be of relevance to members who seek access for future research
interests.
Further details of the DaHNO project can be obtained from

QUALITY OF LIFE
ASSESSMENT
BAHNO is actively involved in promoting the assessment of
outcomes in head and neck cancer. The measurement of health
related quality of life is an important part of this process
and, following a presentation at the 2001 Annual Meeting,
BAHNO Council is recommending the adoption of the University
of Washington questionnaire as part of the minimum dataset.
Further information and details of useful websites are given
in a summary
prepared by Simon Rogers .
Improving Outcomes
in Head and Neck Cancers
The consultation version of this document has been produced
by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence and is now
available. It can be downloaded from the NICE
website where further information about the project can
be found.
BAHNO
Travelling Scholarship
BAHNO offers a Travelling Scholarship to help fund a visit
for training experience for trainee members of BAHNO, enrolled
in a recognised UK specialist training programme. Visits may
be to an institution in the UK or abroad. Please contact the
Honorary Secretary
if you need further information.
An application can be submitted at any time before the 1st
February each year. This will be acknowledged and is considered
by Council at their February/March meeting. The result is
announced at the AGM in April. A condition of the award is
that the Travelling Scholar should produce a short written
report of their visit for Council, and a brief verbal report
at the AGM if requested.
The application process requires the following to be sent
to the Honorary Secretary:
- Name, contact details and a brief C.V.
- Outline of visit with intended purpose
- Confirmatory letter from institution(s) to be visited
- Letter of support from Lead Trainer or Training Programme
Director
- Estimate of costs involved and other sources/amount of
funding including any salary paid.
BAHNO Research Grants
BAHNO is able to offer a number of research bursaries in
support of smaller head and neck research or audit projects.
Grants of around £1000 will be awarded (or a single
award of up to £4000 for an exceptional project). Multi-disciplinary
projects are particularly welcome. An application
form is available here. All applications for these annual
awards will be considered by the Research Sub-group and the
results will be announced at the AGM each year.
